Liked It“An ept (opposite of inept) study and introduction of critical theory that fits in your backpack as easily as well as in your cranium. I found the chapters illuminating, even helpful, which is saying a great deal when one considers most of literary criticism.” see full review » see other reviews » |
Didn’t Like It“well, after reading this I am not really any wiser what literary theory is... the answer the book gives is "it depends"” see full review » see other reviews » |
“A very simple, very clear sketch of the swathe if theories that underpin literary criticism. A very good starter for literature students”

The scope is extremely broad, yet it still manages to maintain a sharp focus on the pertinent issues. The appendix of theoretical schools and movements was particularly useful. This isn't the best 'Very Short Introduction' that I've read, but it still ranks above most books of its type that purport to offer an introduction to field. ”
