  • Herr Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: young Austrian composer - child prodigy who has not had commercial success as he has matured. Parents push, sister also talented.
  • Josefa Weber: Oldest of the four Weber sisters - very tall with a powerful, deep rich soprano voice. Always feels unloved and apart. Reads philosophy in several languages.
  • Aloysia Weber: 2nd of the four Weber sisters. Has a light, beautiful soprano voice, and knows it. She and her older sister Josefa are taken out to sing at private concerts
  • Constanze Weber, aka Stanzi: Third of the four Weber sisters. A peace maker who makes herself invisible in corners as she lacks her older sister's gorgeous voices and confidence. She feeds strays and has tender feelings for all.
  • Sophie Weber: Youngest of the four Weber sisters. Has a religious nature, a peacemaker and doer of good. Does not have the musical talents of her older sisters. Closest in age and confidences to Constanza
  • Frau Maria Caecilia Weber, aka Mama: Mother of the four Weber sisters. A fat, unmusical, unlovely, scheming, unhappy martinet with"plans" for her daughters. Her only talent lies in her baking.
  • Fridolin Weber: Father of the four Weber sisters. A violinist who makes his living teaching, copying music, playing where ever needed - and never enough. A loving father who has taught his daughters about music and cherishes each of them.
  • Leutgeb: Cello playing friend of Mozart's
  • Alfonso: Musician in the Thursday night group, brother of Herr Weber. Drinks too much.
  • Thorwart: Called "Uncle" Thorwart by the Weber girls, though he is no relation, but comes from the same village ast the senior Webers. A musician attached to the court who has certain connections and power.
  • Johann Schantz: Owner of a music store that sells sheet music as well as instruments. Flirts with Constanzi
  • Joseph Haydn: Older musician - a well-known composer whom Mozart admires
  • Henri: Cello playing suitor of Constanzi
