The Reckoning is the final novel in the Darkest Powers Trilogy written by Kelley Armstrong. It was released in the USA April 6, 2010. It is not the last in the overall series however as Kelley Armstrong has confirmed there will be another series following on from the trilogy - the fourth book will be called The Gathering and these books will follow a new set of teenagers however Kelley has confirmed Chloe and the others will show up.

Following on from the events in The Awakening, the story follows Chloe, Derek, Simon and Tori as they live in the Safe House, formally owned by an ex-employee of the Edison Group, with Simon and Derek's father's friend Andrew. Amongst other visiting supernaturals, the four find themselves racing to try and persuade the renegade group of supernaturals to save Chloe's Aunt, who may possibly be dead, and Rae, a former member of Lyle house.

Within this book, many secrets are unleashed and unanswered questions solved. Chloe faces challenges she may not have thought possible to overcome, both in her head and in her heart.

Quotes edit see section history

  • “Show yourself." "Bossy little necro, aren't you? You just want to see if I'm as hot as I sound.”
    Chloe and Royce
  • “Don't tell Simon that." "Don't tell Simon what?" "That Tori doesn't need to use incantations to cast." "Seriously?" He swore. "You're right. Don't tell me.”
    Derek and Simon
  • “Now, do I dare ask what you guys are doing hiding up here? Or is it going to make me jealous?”
    Simon
  • “I must have been sound asleep if I missed all that shouting." "What shouting?" "You mean that Chloe just told you that she followed a ghost onto a roof and you didn't blast her all the way to Canada?" "He's a little off this morning." "More than a little, I'd say.”
    Simon, Derek, Chloe
  • “And, no, I'm not trying to get between you guys. I'm over you, Simon. I think you and Chloe make the most nauseating cute couple ever. But you can gaze soulfully into each other's eyes another time.”
    Tori
  • “Stupid bitch. Oh, let's take the necromancer with superpowers to the cemetery. Of course you aren't going to raise the dead, you silly girl.”
    Tori
  • “So now I'm the official housekeeper, and if I find wet towels on the floor, I'll hide them between your sheets.”
    Tori
  • “Well, you've got the growling part down pat already. Must be all those years of practice.”
    Chloe
  • “Not easy when you can't talk, is it? Well, not easy for you. I could get used to it.”
    Chloe
  • “So I was right, wasn't I? It's still you, even in wolf form." He grunted. "No sudden uncontrollable urges to go kill something?" He rolled his eyes. "Hey, you're the one who was worried. And I don't smell like dinner, right?" I got a real look for that one. "Just covering all the bases.”
    Chloe
  • “As long as you're here, I have some questions." "You're kidding, right?" "No." "Seriously? I just died. Your boyfriend there killed me. You really expect me to stick around and chat? Love to, but I'm a little traumatized right now. Maybe later.”
    Chloe, Liam
  • “So either you answer my questions, or I'm shoving you back in there." I pointed at his dead body. He laughed. "I'd say you've got balls, but that'd be kinda inappropriate.”
    Chloe, Liam
  • “We need to be careful." "Screw caution, I'm outta here." We looked at her. "Well, I am. As long as someone comes with me." We kept looking at her. She sighed. "Fine, but when everything goes to hell, just remember, I get to blame you guys, because I wanted to leave right away.”
    Chloe, Tori
  • “Am I interrupting something?" "Just making plans for a breakout.”
    Andrew, Tori
  • “You know, from this angle, he doesn't look too bad." I glared at her. "Personally, I'm more a running back girl myself, but if you like the linebacker type, he's-”
    Tori
  • “Oh, this is a great idea. The guy they're most likely to shoot is standing on the roof, giving them a perfect target.”
    Chloe
  • “You were just worried about me." "Yeah." "Because you think I'm worth it." "I absolutely think you're worth it.”
    Chloe, Derek
  • “Looks like you and Derek are getting along again. What happened? Did he give you the look?" "Look?" "You know. The one that makes him look like a whipped puppy, and makes you feel like a jerk for doing the whipping." "Ah, that one. So it works on you, too?" "It even works on Dad. We give in, we tell him it's okay, and the next thing you know, he's chewing up slippers again.”
    Simon, Chloe
  • “You're part of this. We need to start acting like you are." "I guess so." "Gosh, I've never felt so wanted." "I trust you not to stab me in the back for fun, but if it's in your best interests? I'm not turning around. Just in case." "So I've gone from evil incarnate to ordinary bitch. I can live with that.”
    Chloe, Simon, Tori
  • “You know how blind people need Seeing Eye dogs? Well, apparently werewolves could really use Opening Door poltergeists.”
    Liz
  • “I'm sorry about your mom." "Why? She was an evil, murdering bitch." "But she was your evil, murdering bitch.”
    Chloe, Tori
  • “Too much. After we eat, we're going for a walk. A long walk. Far from every possible interruption.”
    Derek
  • “Sounds like a plan.”
    Chloe
  • “My name is Chloe Saunders. I'm fifteen, and I would love to be normal. But normal is one thing I'm not.For one thing, I'm having these feelings for a certain antisocial werewolf and his sweet-tempered brother—who just happens to be a sorcerer—but, between you and me, I'm leaning toward the werewolf. Not normal. My friends and I are also on the run from an evil corporation that wants to get rid of us—permanently.Definitely not normal. And finally, I'm a genetically altered necromancer who can raise the dead, rotting corpses and all, without even trying. As far away from normal as it gets”
    Chloe
  • “Ding-Dong the witch is dead.”
    Tori
  • “"At first, I thought they'd planted something on me. I was shaking out my clothes, washing them. I even ironed them, to be sure." "That was a good idea.""No, it's nuts. I've been hanging around you guys too long."”
    Tori and Chloe
  • “"No one's going to hear you," The ghost said. "We're all alone. Just the way I like it."”

  • It was a perfect moment, one where nothing else mattered. All I could feel was him. All I could taste was his kiss. All I could hear was the pounding of his heart. All I could think about was him, and how much I wanted this, and how incredibly lucky I was to get it, and how tight I was going to hold onto it. This was what I wanted. This guy. This life. This me. I was never getting my old life back, and I didn’t care. I was happy. I was safe. I was right where I wanted to be.
