Liked it a lot and probably would have loved it at another point in my life. The dialogue is superb.

This is the first book in a trilogy about the Rabbitte family. It centers on Jimmy Rabbitte, who appears to know everything about music. When two of his friends approach him to help them manage their band, Jimmy decides that what Ireland needs is some soul and sets to make a great soulful band. The book is very humorous in its telling of the rise and fall of the band and how the band members interact with one another. The book was very real in that it focused on little things like arguing over picking stage names and playing their first gig to only 30 people. I like Roddy Doyle's writing style. This is the second book I have read of his and he does take a little getting used to because he doesn't use quotation marks or have any chapters in his book, but once you get used to his style he is easy to read and I liked how he develops his characters. I also liked that this one was a comedy, I had previously read The Woman Who Walked into Doors and that book is much more serious. It was a fun, quick read and I look forward to finishing the series.

I don't think I can really add much to Lisa's review but I'm glad I read this book. I had read The Woman Who Walked Into Doors a few years ago and didn't really care for it. This book was much lighter and once I got into Doyle's writing style, I really enjoyed it. I don't think I'll be able to read the next 2 bions in the trilogy this month, but I'm definitely going to get to them this year.

A funny, insightful look behind the scene at kids trying to form a band. Good read.

Roddy Doyle writes funny, lovable and authentic characters, detailed down the the last 'Yis." His love for music and Ireland always shows in his novels. Reading the book is like watching the movie itself. Absolutely entertaining and delightful. You can finish it in one read.
