I read this book after hearing that it is J.K. Rowlings favorite. At first I had difficulty get used to the writing style, but by the end of the book I felt that the style only added to the story. I highly recommend reading this book. As a psychology major, I learned a bit about abusive...

The first novel romps home! An astonishingly sympathetic portrayal of femininity. From a man.

not bad. not my favorite of Roddy Doyle's but very moving. You can almost feel her getting hit. I was cringing as I read it. He has a way of making his characters incredibly real.

An interesting book with a difficult subject matter. Spousal abuse was very vivid and disturbing. Well written in that each and every paragraph contained a lot of information. You would not want to skip over any paragraph like some books that drone on and on about some fluff or another.
The alcoholism wasn't touched on much and she basically used drink to ease her pain regarding her husbands seriously evil abuse.

This book was incredibly hard to read, but well worth it.

Doyle does an amazing job of creating Paula, an ordinary woman living in extraordinary circumstances. Paula's simple narrative (reminded me of talking heads) gives a stark picture of domestic abuse, but also life after the abuse. Often heartbreaking, but also funny this is a book about people and why we do the things we do. I'm sure this will stay with me for a long time.

You have to keep in mind, this book was written by a man.

A gut-wrenching story told from the view of an abused wife. Roddy Doyle is an amazing writer.

Thought being recommended by JK Rowling the book would be a little bit more. Kind of domestic abuse from the woman's character written by a man.....

I liked it. I didn't LOVE it. I really do enjoy Roddy Doyle's style of writing, but I didn't come away from it saying to myself I really loved this book. Maybe because it was a bit depressing. But then again, I've liked depressing books before. I love Sophie's Choice and that's as depressing as it gets.
