It didn't make a lasting impression when I read it the first time, but on this go-round I couldn't put it down, and finished it in about two days. I found the male love-interest Gilbert Markham an ass, but the sections involving Helen's past life were incredibly compelling. It reminded me of Frances Burney's _Cecilia_ at times--slightly less uncomfortable to read, but it fills you with similar anxiety and fear for Helen's safety and fate.
Anne is often the overlooked Bronte, but don't be fooled--she was prodigiously talented. A book not to be missed if you enjoy mid-nineteenth-century Brit Lit.”
“Totally awesome. Best of Bronte sisters. Jane Austen can eat it. ”

Though written in a different time period, the characters have real zing, and you can easily connect to the main character. I read this book in high school more than once. Anne Bronte is my favorite of the Bronte writers.”

The story serves as a very good warning against marriage made based on emotions and delusive hopes despite the warnings and wisdom of elders.”

It had a gripping plot that grabbed me from the first page and didn't let up until the last page. I liked the narrative style of the novel too. Anne Bronte uses the perspectives of her two primary protagonists, Mr. Gilbert Markham, and our heroine, Mrs. Helen Graham, extraordinarily effectively.
This novel certainly addresses some very profound issues that women of all ages have faced in marriages. I truly believe that while this novel has some very dark, almost Gothic, undertones; Anne Bronte has, in my opinion, written a novel that puts forth a powerful moral message and empowers women to make the decisions that are best for themselves and their children. Anne also has her heroine taking up her brush and canvas in order to make money to support herself and her son - a thoroughly shocking notion for a woman of gentility to embark upon. Toward that end, I think that this book is an excellent example of early-Victorian proto-feminist writing. To me "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" is as captivating a novel as Charlotte's "Jane Eyre" or "Villette". A book for all times, and one that I will read again and again.”
“This was a truly beautiful book. Very soft, and romantic--but suspensful too. I could not even guess how it was going to turn out until the very last pages. That is a sign of a good author; compare that to how soon you can guess Jane Eyre's ending!
In my opinion, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall equals and outranks Jane Eyre, by far. By far. Charlotte's style suits some people (perhaps, the dramatical, romantisized ones?), but as for me-- Anne's good sense, intelligence, and wondrous balance of truth & beauty made this book (and Agnes Grey) a pure, delightful pleasure to read.”
