This is the story of a baseball hero based on the Arthurian legend of the Fisher King. Roy Hobbs is determined to be the best baseball player ever and to break every record ever set. This ego, along with his lack of self-control, work against him throughout the novel.

  • Pop Fisher: The grizzled manager of the New York Knights, Pop was once a fine player who is remembered for making a crucial error in his playing career and for never winning the big game. He is also Memo's uncle.
  • Max Mercy: A seedy journalist who is more concerned with unearthing the player’s personal lives than covering the sport itself.
  • Gus Sands: A morally bankrupt bookie who enjoys placing bets against Hobbs. Gus is also always around Memo, despite Roy’s protests.
  • Iris Lemon: A fan of Roy's who comes to play an important part in his career.
  • Harriet Bird: The mysterious woman Roy meets on the train.

Roy Hobbs pawed at the glass before thinking to prick a match with his thumbnail and hold the spurting flame in his cupped palm close to the lower berth window, but by then he had figured it was a tunnel they were passing through and was no longer surprised at the bright sight of himself holding a yellow light over his head, peering back in.
