This was a fun novel about a witch.

A professor of a small college discovers that his wife is practicing magic.
He's disgusted that his wife, superstitious and flighty as she is, would do such a thing and orders her to immediately discontinue her practices.
Unfortunately, he does not consider that there could have been benefits associated with her charms.
I enjoyed the book very much despite the prejudices against women. Since this book was published in the 50's, I guess that type of thing is par for the course.
All in all, I enjoyed the prose, the story and the ending.

Set in the conservative college world of the 1940s, Conjure Wife is a haunting tale in which a college professor of sociology considers witchcraft to be superstition. Norman Saylor discovers to his chagrin, that once the foolish charms his wife made were burned and he convinced her that it was all nonsense...things start to go horribly wrong in his life....

What a great story. You just don't see horror like this any more -- subtle, well-written, 100% normal and believable until the author comes along and yanks the rug out from underneath you. I will read this one over and over with great pleasure.

Our narrator is a bit of male pig, but Leiber's gift is in achieving great economy with instilling fear of the unknown.

I remember this book quite fondly, but I'm a pushover for Fritz Leiber in any case. It was made into a fine British horror film, Burn Witch, Burn (aka Night of the Eagle) with Peter Wingarde.

I didn't like either of these stories nearly as much as when I first read them several decades ago. I was very disappointed that they didn't live up to my fond memories at all. They are two of the classics of early fantasy and worth reading for that reason, but they seemed much less compelling these days.
