If you love a great storyline, you'll love The Last Town on Earth. It's historical fiction intermeshed with medical thriller. Set during WWI, during the draft, a flu epidemic sweeps the West Coast, when one fictional town called Commonwealth, Oregon, quarantines itself from the rest of the world to prevent the epidemic to enter the town. A lot of twists and turns in each chapter to keep you guessing what happens next, all the way to the end. I recommend it.

A study in humanity. For those who are drawn to "epidemic"/"plague" books.

This is a very well written book that delves into the human condition under stress. Great historical setting of early 1920's in the Pacific Northwest timberland. 1918 influenza which took 100 million lives worldwide plays a prominent role in this book and is as important as any character. It was engaging to read and I couldn't put it down after the halfway point.

If I didn't have outside life to live, I would have read this book through from beginning to end in one sitting - and I almost did. Completely mesmerizing. Sort of an inverse of "The Plague" - what would happen if the disease (the flu - this is historical fiction) were brought in to one town by one person, instead of rats? What if the town attempted to barricade itself off from the rest of the world to protect themselves, instead of to protect everyone else? Fascinating - multiple layers of moral complexity, well-drawn characters and plenty of emotion. Definitely one of my favorites.

Very interesting book. A town's own initially effective and well planned idea to keep influenza from getting into their town but ends up with a lot of repercussions. I'm a Public Health Nurse so this type this appeals to me.
