This is a book about a daughter of the physician of the Tower of London in Tudor times. In this book Tilly matures and learns to look after her family.

- Tilly: The Physician's daughter and the main character.
- Queen Mary: Mary is Catholic and will often burn priests and other people if they refuse to become a Catholic. She was often called Bloody Mary. When Elizabeth was becoming more popular than she was, she imprisoned her. Tilly will have to be careful to keep her head on her shoulders.
- Tom: Tilly's friend who works in the Royal Menagerie. Tilly's parents strongly disprove of him. Sal also likes him.
