Just finished this marvelous book and I LOVED it - it has left me thinking about it all week, trying to process all the questions I have, the theories I've read. Would anyone else like to get into a discussion about this with me?

For example, why do NO one ever wonder at (or at least mention) the seemingly random action of Merricat's telling us that one of the only THREE things she likes is Richard Plantagenet, the 3rd Duke of York (or a bricklayer who claims to be the illegitimate son of Richard III)... This factet of the novel is always glossed over in the reviews and discussions I've read, likely due to the impact of the sister in conjunction of the deathcap mushroom reference, but I can't help feeling it significant in some way.
Perhaps it was enough for Merricat to feel a kinship for the man who spent his life attempting to gain power, and possibly the throne? Or was it his determination to defend and protect his world? There's an affinity they share as two people who each want to fortify something - Merricat, her "castle" and the solitude she shares with her sister; Richard Plantagenet, the throne.

And do you think the death of her family is enough to justify the actions of the villagers? Or was there more behind it?

I hope there are others out there who are as curious as I am about this marvelous work by the talented Ms. Jackson. I can't wait to hear your thoughts and theories!
