To be honest, I picked this up because 1) it seems to have a reputation as a classic favorite among vampire novels, and 2) I've been seeing posters for the TV show all throughout NYC.

Let me just say that Elena is the most annoying, immature, self-centered bitch I have ever spent 500 pages on. Why make your protagonist so obnoxious? I can understand doing this for the sake of character development, but even when she magically transforms (N.B. no transition) into the strong, mature heroine, I failed to be sympathetic.

In other characters, you've got your typical best-friend-turned-rival-turned-bitch, tortured vampire boyfriend, and completely one-dimensional villain. This was classified as horror, but the only thing horrifying about it was the writing.
