• Elena Gilbert: Elena is the main character of the book. The book is centered around her, Damon, and Stefan. She's the most popular girl at school, and can get any guy she wants. She has blue eyes and golden hair. At the beginning of the story she has just returned from her summer vacation in France, and we learn that her parents both died in a car crash.
• Stefan Salvatore: He's dark and handsome, and carries a great secret: He's a vampire. Although, he denies his natural instincts do drink human blood and drinks animal's blood instead. He came to Fell's Church to change and start his life over, hoping to find a place to fit in. He is broody and still not over his first love Katherine.He will die for her any time.
• Damon Salvatore: He is Stefan's brother, and a vampire as well. However, his personality is starkly different from Stefan's: He doesn't deny his instincts and often drinks human blood and uses his powers to aid his sadistic plans. He is extremely handsome and evil. He doesn't think of anybody but himself. He would kill to get Elana to love him.
• Katherine von Swartzchild: The girl who was the object of both Stefan and Damon's affections back in Renaissance Italy. She too had a secret; she was a vampire as well, and was the one who changed Stefan and Damon into vampires.
• Matt Honeycutt: Elena's ex-boyfriend, he is described as having "all-American" looks. He has blonde hair and blue eyes, and enjoys playing football. He continues to harbor feelings for Elena even though she broke up with him.
• Meredith Sulez: One of Elena's best friends, and the level-headed one. She has an olive complexion with dark hair and eyes. Meredith believes in druids and the supernatural.
• Bonnie McCullough: Another one of Elena's best friends, she has red hair and brown eyes and a reputation for being a bit of an air-head. Although later we find that she has powerful psychic powers.
• Robert: Fiance of Aunt Judith, Elena's aunt that she lives with. Also called Bob.
• Aunt Judith: Elena's aunt and legal guardian of her after the death of her parents.
• Margaret Gilbert: Elena's four year old sister. She has blonde hair.
• Caroline Forbes: Formerly one of Elena's best friends, Caroline grew a deep dislike for her during summer, and they consider each other to be enemies.
• Tyler Smallwood: A friend of Dick's, he is described as being handsome, but also "broad" and "fleshy". He is also kinda described as a "jerk."
• Dick Carter: Tyler's friend and nearly his "lackey". He dated Vicki.
• Vicki Bennett: Formerly Tyler's boyfriend, she fell victim to a strange event that happened on the night of the homecoming dance.
• Mr. Tanner: A teacher at school who often starts arguments with or picks on the students. Stefan is the only one that seems able to stand up to him.
• Alaric Saltzman: A new history teacher at the school who wants to seem very friendly to his students. He acts more like a student than a teacher himself!
• Mrs. Grimesby: The woman who runs the costumes for the parade.
• Mrs. Clarke: Secretary at the high school.
• Mr. Shelby: Janitor at the high school.
• Ms. Halpern: Elena's trigonometry teacher.
• Yangtze: Bonnie's mother's pet Pekinese dog.
• Mayor Dawley: The town mayor.
