Making the Run

Making the Run

by Heather Henson

After a few hits off the bottle I close my eyes. The whiskey is making me numb and cozy. I could stay this way all night. Moving fast and feeling nothing. This is what I've been doing all year. Getting high, marking time. This day next year I don't know where I'll be. But I can guarantee it won't be here, on the road between Huntsville and Rainey.

This book is a story of two teens who are in their last year of high school and everything suddenly spirals out of control. Ginny, a bubbly charasmatic girl who is well loved by everyone falls for the wrong boy and ends up pregnant and dead, with the boyfriend nowhere to be found. Lulu, the main character is dark and solitary, withdrawing herself to her dark room whenever she faces a situation she feels she can't handle. Lulu plans to leave town after school's over. Her dark room is full of photographs that brings people and places to life in front of her eyes. This and her best friend Ginny was the only thing that brought joy to her eyes when things were going wrong, until Jay steps into her life. Jay is an old friend of hers - her brother's best friend to be exact. Lul deals with a lot of emotions and situations in this book including loss, first loves, betrayal, familial problems and drugs.

It's hard to explain this book without giving it away. Lulu McClellan has been an outsider her whole life. She takes pictures to make sense of the world around her. She goes through the crazy twists and turns of teenage-hood always taking pictures. She is up and down with her father, her past love comes back to live in a cottage in the woods near Lulu's house. Although, Lulu has been an outcast her best friend is the preppy, pretty, popular girl. They get along great but bad news hits Lulu hard when she finds out what happened to her. This book is a great book that a senior could read because Lulu herself, is a senior. Also, I loved how the author used such great detail and explained everything so anybody reading the book could picture it in their mind.
