  • Theo: First Blacksmith of the owls. Great Horned owl; a gizzard-resister.
  • Myrrthe: An old snowy owl that has been a good and faithful friend and servant to Queen Siv for a long time.
  • Grank: First Collier of the Owls
  • Dear Owl: You, the reader.
  • Glaux: The owl's God.
  • Svenka: Pregnant polar bear.
  • Rorkna: The Glauxess at the Glauxian Sister's Retreat in N'yrthgar. She is Queen Siv's cousin.
  • Fengo: The Chieftain to a wolf pack in Beyond the Beyond. He has a form of fire sight and is studying the nature of fire with Grank.
  • Penryck: A well known hagsfiend.
  • Coryn: The King of Ga'Hoole. A young Barn Owl whose mother is the tyrant Nyra. He is also Soren's nephew.

  • Bitter Sea: A stretch of sea between the N'yrthgar and the S'yrthgar. It is considered a free-fly zone.
  • N'yrthgar: The Northern Kingdoms. This is where the main characters were born and where all the action is.
  • S'yrthgar: The Southern Kingdoms.
  • Beyond the Beyond: A desolate region where fire rains from the sky. This is where dire wolves live.
  • Glauxian Sisters Retreat: A haven of owls that preach the teachings of Glaux and Hoole. They are a peaceful lot who make their home underground. They believe that hagsfiends roam because somehow owls lost their belief in Glaux and a rift was formed, opening a portal through which the hagsfiends could enter their world.
  • Ice Dagger: A great mound of ice that rises up from the Everwinter Sea. This is where ice daggers and swords are harvested.
  • Everwinter Sea: A large expanse of sea in the N'yrthgar.

  • Wilf: When an owl's feathers lay flat against their bones, making them appear smaller than they are. Usually occurs when an owl is nervous or scared.
  • Yarp: When an owl vomits a pellet, which is the compressed bones, fur, and teeth of their prey, which the owl cannot digest. It is the fact owl's yarp that labels them with the most noble digestive system known to birds.
  • Wet Poopers: Other birds that expel their waste in a watery form. Owls do very little of this, and look down on the birds that do.
  • Hagsfiend: A demon like creature from the owl hell. They have black feathers that are very poorly groomed, making their flying very noisy. They smell like crows, and can be scented very far away. Tear apart their victims and then mount their severed heads on ice swords.
  • Crowls: A mixture of crow and owl. Hagsfiends are believed to be them.
  • Ice Swords and Daggers: And ice sword and an ice dagger are two weapons made of ice. They have sharp edges and are mostly harvested from the Ice Dagger in the Everwinter Sea. The main form of weaponry during the time of Grank.
  • Ga': An owl that has a great spirit in their gizzard.
  • Nachtmagen: The evil magic of the Hagsfiends.
  • Issen Blaue: A type of blueish ice.
  • Issen glossen: A glassy ice that can be made by making very hot fires.
  • Bonk: A very hot coal. These kinds of coals can only be caught on the fly (while an owl is flying).
  • Gadfeathers: Owls that had a beautiful voice. They often wore very gaudy accessories on their feathers. They do not have a permanent roosting place and travel around the N'yrthgar searching for work and such. Are looked down upon by other owls because they do not have a permanent resting place.
  • schneddynfyrr: A nest for an unhatched egg, which keeps the egg warm until it hatches.
