  • Grank: An older Spotted Owl that looks after Hoole. He is very intelligent and a deep thinker. He is the first collier and mentor to Theo.
  • Theo: A Great Horned Owl that is a gizzard-resister. He is the first blacksmith and Grank's apprentice.
  • Phineas: A Pygmy owl that is washed up on the island Hoole lives. Becomes Hoole's best friend.
  • Hoole: A Spotted Owl. Only son of King H'rath and Queen Siv. Doesn't know of his parentage, and is raised by Grank and Theo.
  • Lord Arrin: An owl clan Chieftain that made a pact with the hagsfiends in order to gain dominion over all of the N'yrthghar.
  • Fengo: A dire wolf and chieftain of all the wolf Clans. He is a good friend of Grank and also knows much of fire and metal.
  • Brother Berwyck: A kind Boreal owl from the Glauxian Brother's Retreat. He is the first outsider to meet Hoole, and teaches the young owl to fish. Is good friends with Hoole.
  • Queen Siv: A Spotted Owl and wife of the late King H'rath. She gave up Hoole to keep him safe. Has an injured port wing.
  • Penryck: A hagsfiend. One of Lord Arrin's closest advisers.
  • Svenka: A polar bear that befriended Siv. She has two cubs.
  • Rolf: A male polar bear. Svenka's cub.
  • Namara McNamara: Also known has Hordwearde. She is an older wolf and mate of Dunleavy McHeath. She leaves him.
  • Soren: A Barn Owl from the present time during the reign of King Coryn. Lives at the Great Ga'Hoole tree and is a member of the Parliament.
  • Svarr: Svenka's mate. He only sees Svenka during mating season.
  • Anka: A female polar bear and Svenka's other cub.
  • Joss: A very reliable messenger for Queen Siv.
  • King H'rath: The former king of the N'yrthghar. He was slain in battle by Lord Arrin himself.
  • Pleek: A Great Horned Owl that took a hagsfiend as a mate.
  • Ygryk: Mate of Pleek. She desperately craves an chick, though she and Pleek cannot manage to have one- the eggs end up misshapen.
  • Dunleavy McHeath: A very abusive and mean wolf. He has many mates and has given all of them some sort of scar. Is an enemy of Fengo and hates him. Is the Chieftain of a Clan.
  • Snow Rose: A snowy owl and a former gadfeather. She befriended Siv for a short time and later joined her army.

  • N'yrthghar: The Northern Kingdoms. This is where a majority of the book takes place.
  • S'yrthghar: The Southern Kingdoms. Grank has to pass through here to get to Beyond the Beyond.
  • Beyond the Beyond: A place of fire. The dire wolves live here and this is where the five volcanoes are. It is known for being uncivilized.
  • Bitter Sea: A small sea north of the Everwinter Sea. The Bitter Sea houses a very warm unnamed island in the middle of it, and this sea does not freeze up.
  • Everwinter Sea: A large sea that encompasses most of the N'yrthghar.
  • Dark Fowl Island: A mainly uninhabited island where Siv and Svenka take refuge.
  • H'rathghar Glacier: A large glacier in the northeast of the N'yrthghar. This is where most of the war takes place.
  • Dunmore: A volcano in the Sacred Ring of volcanoes in Beyond the Beyond.
  • Tridents: Three unnamed islands in the Everwinter Sea.
  • Ice Cliff Palace: A large maze of ice tunnels near the Firth of Fangs. It is easy to get lost in.

  • Glauxian Brothers: This is a group of peaceful owls that devote their life to study. When they are not on a vow of silence they talk about their studies. They take refuge on unnamed island in the Bitter Sea.
  • Glauxian Sisters: These owls take no vow of silence and believe that because owls are losing their faith in Glaux the hagsfiends can wreck havoc on the living owl universe. They live in a hole in the ground.

  • Glaux: The owl god.
  • Hagsfiends: Evil owls that are part crow and part owl. They possess great magic. They have all black feathers and poisonous half-hags living in their feathers. They fear salt water because they lack the oil on their feathers that allows them to shed water.
  • Hagsmire: The owl hell.
  • Glaumora: The owl heaven.
  • Ursa: The polar bear god.
  • Half-Hags: The tiny pests that live on a hagsfiend. They eat all the other pests, like lice, that live on a hagsfiend. They are poisonous, though the hagsfiends have grown immune to it.
  • Nachtmagen: The evil magic of the hagsfiends.
  • Schneddynfyrr: A nest for an egg.
