On assignment for the government, Campion and two adventuresome friends venture into Averna to solve an ancient riddle that will grant the hereditary stewards true ownership. Incognito, they take rooms at the antedeluvian manor house. Two sisters and a brother currently live in the rather more than run-down manor, including Amanda Fitton, a plucky teenager with a taste for motors.

Campion finds that he is not the only party interested in the deed to Averna, and his competitors display rather more determination than sense of fair play. Campion must resort to subterfuge with Amanda as his trusty "lieutenant," much to the chagrin of her family and their guests. Plans become convoluted, and much more long-term.

In addition to their political adversaries, Amanda and her family run up against another ghastly terror, one which smacks more of the supernatural than international.

After a heart-stopping showdown on the old pier, Amanda and Campion emerge wounded, but triumphant.
