King writes like the friendliest, most patient teacher you've ever had. Also an interestingly crafted memoir of sorts.

I really liked/enjoyed reading this book. I liked that he gave a lot of background on his life and his process of getting published etc. I enjoyed getting to "know the man" behind the name so to speak. He was quirky and had me laughing at times.. something I guess I didn't expect from a horror writer. I actually don't recall reading any of his work, but Ive seen most of the movies. I may have to consider reading some of his work now, although I'm not really "into" the horror genre. I found this very easy and entertaining to read as well as helpful as a beginning writer... it wasn't a "technical manual" but entertaining while giving direction..
Thank you Mr King and much continued success to you!

Excellent non-fiction piece by one of America's favorite fiction writers. He walks through his own experiences leading up to his current work. Excellent tips that may seem like common sense, but that need to be spoken (or written?) out loud for aspiring and starting writers to begin taking proactive action.

Loved the portion where he provides the original and then edited versions of the intro to 1408. Helps you visualize and internalize what he had been saying all along about drafting and cleaning up. As an editor, being able to see how this great writer edits his work to be "outside world" ready totally rocked my world.

Fascinating section detailing his recollection of his accident when he was run over by a van while taking an afternoon walk near his summer home. Encouraging story of his recovery, basically regaining his self esteem as a writer and putting nose to grindstone to keep that forward momentum going.

Inspirational and I learned a lot from this great writer. I especially look forward to reading some of the books he recommends in the last part of the book.

Loved this book! But my suggestion to other readers would be, read this before reading any of his other books because his childhood experiences influences future characters and I feel you actuallly obtain a better understanding of his subsequent works.

One of those books you really should read. Not that it's necessarily the best book on writing; there may be better. But you can't fail to know this reference in the world of how-to-write books. King's description of his personal life is strangely compelling, perhaps because it shows us who he was prior to 'Carrie', before we all knew him. This book may or may not really make you a better writer (King has his own opinions about that), but it'll certainly make you feel more interested in writing seriously.
