And I recommend it to every writer I meet, talk about it in every class I teach, and give it away more than any other book I've ever read. |
“Although I don't read King because I'm too afraid of his genre, this book is enlightening, funny and very personal. You can't help but admire this man as a writer (and husband.) It's worth the read just to hear about his wonderful wife. However, the real gift is what you learn about yourself as a writer (and in my case, a teacher of writing.)”

In his memoir, King throws light onto the tools of the trade and the actual act of writing itself.
It’s obvious that the guy not only knows what he is talking about when it comes to writing, but he knows how to say it in a way that anyone can understand. King isn’t trying to be trendy here. He isn’t telling you that he just sat down in a coffee shop one day, decided to become a bestselling author, and wrote The Stand. He is telling you that writing fiction is a job, and if you want to do this job, it’s one that you had better be passionate about. After reading this book you will understand the seriousness that writing fiction demands.
It’s odd, but this was actually the first Stephen King book I have ever read. It won’t be the last, that’s for sure.

The second part is written as if he is talking to you, but getting his conversation topics out of a textbook. This creates an interesting, inspiring, and suprisingly well laid out plan to write well. I didn't have any expectations of this book when I picked it up, but was thrilled with what it contained.
I'm a new language arts teacher and I only kinda know what I'm doing, but this book gave me some great ideas and ways to accomplish them. "All hail the King!"”
“Ray Bradbury wrote a book like this, but this one's better by far.”
