I don't care for a lot of King books, and i rarely buy them or read them...but THIS little jewel! I read and REread this baby. And I recommend it to every writer I meet, talk about it in every class I teach, and give it away more than any other book I've ever read.

It's a masterpiece of...

I've read this book 4 times and I'll do so again, it's that good "wonderfully different" from his novels and a must for someone who wants to learn from a master story teller

Surprisingly good, easily the best thing he's written.

On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft – Stephen King
    4 stars

“Description begins in the writer’s imagination, but should finish in the reader’s.” Stephen King

This is definitely more of a memoir of Steven King’s life than a reference book for aspiring writers. King gives a brief sketch of his early life prior to a more detailed description of his writing career. I enjoyed hearing of his early struggle to be published and the impact of his first great success. The advice given in the “Toolbox” and “On Writing” sections of the book is basic and practical. I loved that he cited examples from some of his favorite authors. King served some time as a high school English teacher. This book gives me the impression that he was very good at his job. However, I’m glad he was able to give it up for a more lucrative career.

I talked about this book quite a bit while reading. 1. Is there a more likeable man than Stephen King? What a pal. 2. Chock full of no-nonsense advice for creating a streamlined, stylized piece of writing (no adverbs! kill your darlings! second draft = first draft - 10%!). I also appreciated that King wrote a bit on the process of finding agents and getting published, which I've found sadly excused from other books on writing by writers. I recommend this to anybody who writes--short stories, novels, reviews, blogs, etc. Stephen King has much to teach us all.

Although not deemed "autobiographical" by King, it certainly contains telling snapshots from his childhood & past. The portion on writing as a craft were fascinating & witty in true King fashion. A must read for writers or King fans

Part memoir and part instruction manual, this book is an engrossing read into what shaped Stephen King as an author. He shares all the moments - good, bad and some very ugly. Even if you read it only for the insight into him, it is well worth it; however, read for the writing insight as well.
