It (Signet Books)

by Stephen King

They were seven teenagers when they first stumbled upon the horror. Now they were grown-up men and women who had gone out into the big world to gain success and happiness. But none of them could withstand the force that drew them back to Derry, Maine to face the nightmare without an end, and the evil without a name. What was it? Read It and find out...if you dare! "IT" tells the story of seven friends and their epic battle with a heinous monster they call It. King depicts friendship and childhood here in a tender and nostalgic way. These elements make you care for the characters and draw you in to the world of the Loser's Club. And his depiction of Pennywise is legendary, and rightfully so. It isn't King's best writing (his repetitive listing gets ridiculous quick), and it's also a little uneven. The childhood passages are much better, and more...

I have read "It" a very long time ago (I was 10 or 12) and I really liked "It" on the first place for its slowly-and-softly-brought atmosphere and that is what King is a master at.
But I must recognize that the end is somehow hard to believe. It lack "something", although you can't tell what (let's call it "a real ending").
That's the reason why I put a grade of (****) instead of (*****).

    I agree with Kim M.

I really did enjoy the book for what it was. I enjoyed the story of when the group were kids. The whole "horror' aspect of 'It" wasn't what I enjoyed about the book at all. I enjoyed the dynamic between this group of friends growing up in their generation.

It was reminiscent of another book, one I liked much better called "Boy's Life" by Robert McCammon. The majority of that novel is set in the summer of 1964 in small town Alabama.

Hi, is there anyone out there who doesn’t think IT to be that great novel? I sure hope I’m not the only one, or I’ll begin to think I’ve misunderstood something!!!! I’m a great King’s fan (as you can see from my shelf) and I must honestly say I liked ¾ of IT but sometimes it seems King is not able to find a suitable ending to his novels and spoils all wonderful things he wrote in the first part of the novel. To find out what IT really ass disappointed me very much and even the way the guy finally defeated it was an unwelcome surprise. I don’t want to get much into details here in case someone who hasn’t read IT yet should read this but what do you say about the way the kids cemented their friendship before finding the courage to fight IT all together. They were just children and I found that episode disgusting and it had nothing to do with the rest……Well pet cematary was very good and scary and so was Shining. The tommyknockers was also a far better novel than IT!!!! Well guys let me know what you think of this
