This was an outstanding novel. While Alexie gets most of the praise as "the Native writer of our time" I enjoy Welch just the same.

Fabulous telling of the life lead by the Blackfeet Indian tribe just before they started reservation life. I felt the last two paragraphs of the book were unnecessary, though. It could have ended well without it.

This book is on my "favorites" list because it is one of my favorite books. James Welch did an amazing job with this historical fiction. It is such a great story full of sadness yet hope. It was interesting to learn what parts of the story were actually true. Welch is a great author and this book is soooo worth it!

A great insight into the Native American culture in the late 1800s; written with empathy and understanding of their plight.

Very engaging writing. I read this for a class and finished ended up reading ahead and finishing the book around three a.m. one night because I just couldn't put it down. I highly recommend it!
