  • Paul: An apostle who describes Satan as a hinderer. Wrote letters to companions and churches that are included in our New Testament.
  • John: Writer of one of the Gospels in the New Testament. Parts of the Gospel are quoted.
  • Pharaoh: Held the Israelites--was instructed by Moses to let them go--refused and was subject to plagues until he complied.
  • James: Brother of Jesus and writer of one of the books of the New Testament.
  • Dillon Robinson: A Marine who performed heroic acts that are classified.
  • William Cowper: Hymn writer (note: last name is pronounced like Cooper). At least one of his hymns came after a period of deep depression during which Cowper contemplated suicide.
  • Wilda Mathews: Wife of Arthur, trapped in China when the communists overrun it after WWII.
  • Reba Robinson: Dillon's mother who prayed for him throughout his time of service to his country and his reentry into real life.
  • Moses: Chosen by God to go to Pharaoh and demand that the Israelites be allowed to leave. Led the Israelites through the desert to the Promised Land.
  • Russell and Darlene Diebler: Laborers for Christ in New Guinea who were interred in camps when the Japanese invaded the East Indies. Darlene realized that despite whatever circumstances she found herself in, God was still there with her.
  • Hagar: Maid of Sarah, had a child with Abraham, sent out to the desert with her child and while in the desert was sustained by God.
  • Joseph: A favorite son who was despised by his brothers and sold into slavery. Continued to serve God and eventually was able to save his brothers from famine due to the post he achieved.
  • Hezekiah: Felt the Lord's presence while surrounded by an army bent on annihilating him.
  • Peter: Leader of the apostolic band and writer of several New Testament books.
  • Andrew Murray: A South African pastor and author.
  • Jason: A teen prodigal son who returns to faith after a run in with the law.
  • Alan Elwood: Vicar attacked by a dog named Satan. Used as an illustration.
  • Timothy: One of Paul's companions--received at least two letters from Paul.
  • Job: In the Old Testament, the book that bears his name recounts how Satan was given permission to test Job to determine his faithfulness.
  • Jacob: Old Testament twin who took the birthright of his brother and had to flee. Later wrestled with God and had his name changed to Israel.
  • David: A former shepherd who was chosen by God to be King. Wrote Psalms that discuss some of his suffering.
  • Paul White: Dr. in a bush hospital in east Africa who saw a man's feet healed after persistent prayer.
  • Yamusi Cikata: African schoolteacher with infected feet who insisted that Dr. White pray with him for healing of his feet rather than do the amputations.
  • Martyn Lloyd-jones: Preached a sermon on the terror of the disciples during the storm.
  • Arthur Mathews: Missionary with CIM, the last of their missionaries to be evacuated from China.
  • C. H. Mackintosh: Nineteenth century expositor quoted on the topic of faith. Also believes that the Red Sea did not part all at once but bit by bit as the Israelites walked forward in faith.
  • John Henry Newman: Hymn writer
  • Katrina: Author's wife.
  • Karolina W. Sandell-Berg: Writer of hymn "Day By Day"
  • Saul: Goes looking for his father's lost donkeys and meets Samuel.
  • Samuel: Prophet of God who anoints Saul as king of Israel.
  • Daniel W. Whittle: Writer of hymn "Moment By Moment"
  • Dwight Moody: Founder of Moody Bible Institute, referenced as someone who remained close to God all his life.
  • Nicolas Herman: Frenchman who converted to Christianity at age 18. Injured in the 30 years war. At age 50, joined a Carmelite monastery in search of a richer spiritual life. Was assigned kitchen duty which he did begrudgingly for several years before deciding to change his thinking and do his work to the glory of God. This proved the turning point and his correspondence with the Abbot of Beaufort is the basis for the book "The Practice of the Presence of God" published in the 1600s. (He is known in the monastery as Brother Lawrence.)
  • Christin Claypool: Wanted to take Bibles to Cuban Christians so she wore extra layers of clothing to allow room in her suitcase. Her appearance had her singled out at customs throughout the trip. At the Cuban airport, the zipper of her suitcase stuck tight and the customs officer could not examine the contents.
  • George and Sarah Clarke: Christian couple who bought the Pacific Beer Garden in Chicago and changed it to the Pacific Garden Mission. Experienced a miracle that helped them pay the rent.
  • Bertha Smith: Evangelist in China who prayed that God would remove the flies from her dwelling place while she ate and saw Him do it.
  • Mike Hollifield: Youth Pastor who works with author.
  • Hannah: Author's daughter-transfered from Columbia International University to University of Tennessee.
  • Vance Havner: North Carolina evangelist who lost his wife to disease. Was later able to translate this experience into a life lesson.
  • Pastor Im: A Korean pastor who was imprisoned for a long time and kept his courage up by reciting Bible verses.
  • Dr. Anthony Fortosis: A professor who lost his wife to cancer. He meditated on Bible verses during his grief.
  • Cassie Griffin: A shooting victim at Wedgewood Baptist Church in Ft. Worth, Tx. Collected Frogs to remind her to Fully Rely On God.
  • Mary: Mother of Jesus, a virgin who believed what the Lord said would be accomplished.
  • John Bisango: Houston, Texas pastor who promised his daughter he would build her a dollhouse and was motivated to do it by her blind faith that he would do what he said he'd do.
  • Melodye Jan: Pastor Bisango's daughter--when her father promised to build her a dollhouse, she immediately began moving items so that she would be ready when it was built and by doing so, motivated her father to begin the project.

  • Israelites: God's chosen people. Would go through cycles of disobedience, correction, rebellion, punishment, restoration with God. Moses was sent to bring them out of enslavement in Egypt and to the promised land (this is called the exodus).
  • China Inland Mission (CIM): Organization that had missionaries trapped in China at the end of WWII (when the communists overran China)
  • Communist: Followers of a political theory founded by Karl Marx where property is commonly owned and everyone works and is paid according to skills and needs.
  • Pacific Garden Mission: Began in the 1880s when a Christian couple leased the famed Pacific Beer Garden saloon. Ministry to help the downtrodden.
  • Columbia International University: School where author's daughter began her higher education.
  • University of Tennessee: School to which author's daughter transferred. Author and wife were able to find a nice, affordable apartment building for their daughter as an answer to prayer.
