- Lucas Davenport: Main Character - Minneapolis detective who has recently been forced to resign from the force. He's called y a former fling to New York, to help catch not only the killer he put away once before, but a circle of vigilante cops who are assassinating criminals.
- Michael Bekker: An insane and drug-addled doctor who is obsessed with death. After having escaped police custody at his trial for multiple previous murders, he fled to New York and took up where he left off, studying his victims and writing papers on the processes of death and something beyond. His distinguishing characteristic, aside from being insane? He's so beautiful he makes women jealous. Well, he was, before Lucas Davenport ripped up his face with a gun sight.
