Rules of Prey (Lucas Davenport Mysteries)

by John Sandford

The haunting, unforgettable, ice-blooded thriller that introduced Lucas Davenport is so chilling that you're almost afraid to turn the pages and so mesmerizing you cannot stop. (read review)

This is the first book in the Lucas Davenport series. Davenport is on the hunt for a serial rapist and killer and is not afraid to use unorthodox methods. And besides that he has his way with the ladies.
It was an interesting story, where the killer and the cop play a very dangerous game. I look forward to reading the rest of this series.

What a great serial killer book. This killer is one of the most interesting I have read about since Hannibal.

John Sandford's creation of Lucas Davenport is brilliant on many levels. Davenport is a guy who works hard and plays harder and is flawed in some very interesting ways. He has no problem hunting the bad guys and then going off for a romp to complete his day. A great first book to a wonderful mystery series.

Rules of Prey was great. This book painted a particularly detailed picture of a serial killer to me. I thoroughly enjoyed finding, along with Davenport, the clues that the sadistic killer would leave along the trail, and trying to figure them out before he did. It reminded me of a great Agatha Christie mystery, or perhaps on a smaller scale, the Charlie Muffin series. Another great book in a great series that leaves me wanting more.

I really liked this series but for some strange reason I stopped after about 7 books. I really need to get back to it. I loved how Davenport developed through the series. He's one of the first male detectives I read who had a very human side. I really liked the idea that he developed computer games. I'm definitely putting the others on the series in my "to be read" shelf.

Great start to the LONG series. This book really got me hooked into this genre of good guy bends rules and gets the bad guy.

I like the quick readability of the Sandford novels. His main character is a person that just about every upstanding citizen can like...man or woman. A man's man and a woman's man. James Garner could have played this part well, in his younger days. There are violent crimes, but the degree of explicity is contained, and I appreciate that. The fun is in figuring out if he will catch them or not...he doesn't always.
