Given the hype, I was a little disappointed. Kudos to him though, quite a journey.

I am in the middle of reading/listening to this book. I bought it to read for myself and to pass on to a young man who recently got out of prison and who is looking for direction in his life. The early part of the book "teaches" way too much about cooking and dealing cocaine. For someone who might be enticed by his often "glamorous" description of his hustler lifestyle I would be cautious about recommending this book. On the other hand, from a "cultural" perspective, I learned a lot about being from the "hood" being a young black man raised in poverty and what it is like to be in prison. The culture of prison aspect of reading this book is quite enlightening. A great book, read by the author.

This story is inspirational and shows how someone who's been successful in the drug business can use that same doggedness to be successful in another arena - cooking. He is very honest about what he had to overcome in turns of attitude, anger, style and prejudice. He kept knocking on doors. He also shows that the stereotypes of him as an ex-con and Black man in the kitchen came from Whites, other Blacks and Latinos (the later of whom abound) in the restaurant world. I also liked the fact that he showed how he broke through the learn how to eat different foods. He is very honest about how his training in prison kitchens gave him discipline but didn't give him all that he needed to get to the top of the game. His willingness to be open and his discipline coupled with a supportive wife saw him through.

He was outstanding on the Chef Jeff Project on Food Network - I look forward to more of the show and other books by him.

Pretty good book, I read it on my journey to university, guess it made my travelling less daunting, I found this book very inspiring & thought provoking, it made me think and value my own life, and perhaps for someone like me it gave me an insight into the hardships people face when trying to achieve their career goals...

What did I learn hmmmm don't let anyone put you down! and your past mistakes doesn't have to predict your future, it's the decisions you make later on that matters. Common sense one might think, but it's not for those going through tough times!
Positive message I found that I liked was to keep fighting, plan prepare and execute...you can't just hold on to hopes!

Jeff henderson story should be made into a film...I hope someday to eat in his resturant...lol

Hats off to Jeff, at first the book started off with a lot of attitude but it was nice to see the changes Jeff made and the passion he has for his occupation. I'd love to go to Vegas and check out his cooking.
