Perhaps it is British authors, because I am seeing a trend. I didn't love this book, either. I kept putting off finishing it in favor of reading other books. Finally I skimmed through the last fifty pages and just didn't find myself that interested in what happened to Anne. She came off as boring in this book, luke warm. She is supposed to be a passionate, high spirited person and never once could I buy into it with the way Barnes tried to portray her. I felt like Barnes wanted us to be sympathetic with her but then didn't quite know how to make that jive with the history of Anne, so instead we get neither.
