Almost too brimming with detail, this history of New York City up to 1898 has something to interest every New Yorker (or New York buff). It was a major source for Ric Burns' magnificent documentary "New York." A wonderful work of history.

OK, let's face it: If you live in NYC and you haven't at least glanced at this book you are nuts. From Page one this huge tome is riveting. By the time you reach 1898 -- the year the various pieces of the region consolidated into a single city of 5 boroughs, you will be gasping. There is no place on earth remotely like New York -- and this breathtaking book explains why that is so. Rumor has it a sequel will soon be released. Can't wait!

One of my favorite books of all time. The writing is very approachable yet the scholarship herein is immense. To take my time with it, I read it a little bit every day for almost a year. I have learned so much about the city and even the country. I am a history aficionado, but rarely has a book granted me such perspective on politics and the cycles within US and NYC history as this one has. Even more, its subject matter is not just the powerful, it touches labor, poverty, arts, immigration, prejudice, and more.

A very big and interesting book about the history of New York City. I got half way through it and the half I read I enjoyed. I plan to read the other half at a later stage.

Long and sometimes tedious, but worth it.
