  • Mitsuru Ushijima: (1887-1945) Japanese army general. In command of the 32 Army. He commanded the Japanese forces in the southern portion of the Okinawa main island from his headquarters based in Shuri Castle in Naha. He led a skillful defense of the island.
  • Isamu Chō: (1895-1945) Japanese army general at the battle for Okinawa. He was second in command after Mitsuru Ushijima.
  • Simon Bolivar Buckner, Jr.: (1886-1945) American Army Genera. He commanded the 10th Army which assaulted Okinawa in 1945. He was killed during the closing days of the Battle of Okinawa by enemy artillery fire, making him the highest-ranking U.S. military officer to have been killed by enemy fire during World War II.
  • Raymond A. Spruance: (1886-1969) American admiral. Commanded US naval forces during two of the most significant naval battles in the Pacific theater, the Battle of Midway and the Battle of the Philippine Sea. The Battle of Midway was the first major victory for the United States over Japan and is seen by many as the turning point of the Pacific war. The Battle of the Philippine Sea was also a significant victory for the US.
  • Chester W. Nimitz: (1885-1966) American admiral. A five-star admiral in the United States Navy. He held the dual command of Commander in Chief, United States Pacific Fleet, for U.S. naval forces and Commander in Chief, Pacific Ocean Areas, for U.S. and Allied air, land, and sea forces during World War II. He served as Chief of Naval Operations from 1945 until 1947.
  • Marc Mitscher: ‘Pete’ Mitscher (1887-1947) American admiral. Commander of the Fast Carrier task force.
  • William Halsey, Jr.: ‘Bull’ Halsey (1882-1959) American admiral. During World War II he commanded the South Pacific Area during the early stages of the Pacific War against Japan. Later he was commander of the Third Fleet through the duration of hostilities.
