Mary Bennet is determined NOT to marry. She wants to live life according to God's plans for her. She loves music and serious books, improving her mind and doing good works, and cares not for society or possessions and fripperies. Seeing everything at face value, she has no skills in reading people and their thoughts and motives. Visiting her well-married sisters, Jane and Lizzie, she learns skills of caring and housekeeping. Several young men approach her one for her "original mind", one for her unique gifts and Godliness, one for his reasons.Visiting with her sisters and parents show her many different interpretations of marriage and opportunities unimagined open for her.

  • Mary Bennet: Plain, pious, studious middle daughter of the five Bennet daughters, not as attractive and lively as her sisters. She speaks the truth as she sees it., has no interest in social affairs, and irritates her social butterfly of a mother constantly. Admires Mr. Collins and follows his advice.
  • Mr. Bennet: Owner of Longbourn near Meryton in hertfordshire. The estate is entailed away from his five daughters to his cousin Mr. Collins. A man of wit and intelligence with a fine library. Lizzie is his favorite daughter. Ridicules his silly wife and their younger daughters.
  • Mrs. Bennet, a.k.a. "Mama": Mother of the five Bennet daughters, Jane, Elizabeth (Lizzie), Mary, Catherine (Kitty) and Lydia. A garrulous, flighty, possession-impressed woman of nervous disposition anxious to marry off her last two daughters.
  • Mrs. Elizabeth Bennet Darcy, a.k.a. Lizzie: Second oldest of the five Bennet daughters, happily married to Fitzwilliam Darcy and mistress of Pemberley. Very close to her older sister Jane Bennet Bingley.
  • Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy: Master of Pemberly, loving husband of Elizabeth Bennt Darcy, father of their children. Formerly proud and haughty, marriage to Lizzie has softened him.

  • Colonel Darcy Fitzwilliam: Second son of the Earl of Norwich Mills, owns the modest estate, Castle Park, in Castlebury, Norfolk. Looking for a wife. Cousin and close friend of Fitzwilliam Darcy, former co-guardian of Georgiana, and with Darcy assists with their aunt Catherine de Bourgh's estates and affairs.
  • Viscount Henry Fitzwilliam: Older brother of Col. Fitzwilliam and heir to their father's title and estates. Married to Lady Maude.
  • Honorable Lewis Grantley, M.P.: Odd, not handsome, thickly spectacled, stiff, awkward, sad, young man who has leased Netherfield near Longbourn. He attends the assemblies at Meryton, not to dance and so encourage the needy, greedy young ladies seeking husbands, but to talk politics and government. Admires Mary's "original" mind. Uses his walking stick noisily.
  • Mr. Steven Oliver: Tall, thin, mustached and attractive young man with a keen interest in people who is to become the new Vicar at Kympton Saint Giles. Has a desire to read and learn, and a keen sense of humor. Son of an ostler who was trained by by a vicar who recognized his good qualities and potential.
  • Emmaline Langley: 16 year old Kympton choir girl determined to catch the attention of the new young vicar, Steven Oliver.

  • Mrs. Reynolds: Housekeeper of Pemberly, devoted to the Darcys.
  • Mrs. Charlotte Lucas Collins: Wife of Mr. Bennet's cousin, Mr. Collins, who is vicar for Lady Catherine de Bourgh. Mother of Lucas and Louisa. Was Elizabeth Bennet's closest friend growing up. She married Mr. Collins after Lizzie refused him. Lives in Hunsford vicarage near Rosings Park in Kent.
  • Lady Catherine: Mother of sickly Anne, aunt of Georiana and Fitzwilliam Darcy. and Viscount Henry and Colonel Darcy Fitzwilliam. Cantankerous, bossy, imperious, ill-tempered old woman. Owns Rosings Park in Kent. Mr. Collins is her sycophantic clergyman.
  • Anne Catherine de Bourgh: Unmarried daughter of Lady Catherine de Bourgh, sickly, cross and nearing thirty. Darcy refused to honor the betrothal planned by his mother and her sister, Catherine de Bourgh to marry their children.
  • Lady Elliott: Grey-haired mentor to Georgiana Darcy. More knowledgeable about London, society, and fashion than Elizabeth. Had known Mrs. Ainsley, Georgiana's former companion and governess.
  • Mrs. Gardiner: Beloved aunt of the older Bennet sisters. Her husband is their mother's brother. They live in London on Gracechurch Street in Cheapside.
  • Tom Hooks: Works the bellows for the Kympton organ, and takes care of the Gardener's cottage on the Pemberly estate.
  • Callie: Baby nurse to Elizabeth and Darcy's son Charles. Young, but experienced having helped raise her three younger brothers
  • Miss Alicia Johnstone: A large, square, strange, lumbering woman with the acquisitive tendendcies of a cleptomaniac, who says when caught with Pemberley treasures in her over-large reticule, "It might have been mine, you know. I saw him first."
  • Harold Witherspoon: cringing sycophant and opportunist seeking Anne de Bourgh's hand and property in Kent. A mere verger generously volunteering to help the saintly and honourable Mr. Collins, such a holy man!
  • Maria Lucas: Charlotte Lucas Collin's younger sister, friend of Kitty and Mary Bennet.
  • Mr. James Stilton: Twenty year old supercilious and self-concerned heir to his grandfather's Nottingham estate with a penchant for horse racing and gambling. Talented musician who is interested in Mary.
  • Betsy: Tom Hook's wife, the Pemberly servant who does the housekeeping at the Gamekeeper's cottage.
  • Lucas: Young son of Charlotte Lucas Collins and Mr. Collins. A sturdy, quiet, shy boy who is attracted to Mary, though normal shy with strangers.
