- Sir Gilbert de Revilers, aka "Brother Gregory": Husband of Margeret, a brilliant, satiric, loving husband with a gift for trouble, chronicler to the Duke of Lancaster, second son of Sir Hubert who ran away to become a student and then a monk called Brother Gregory
- Dame Margaret: Wife of Sir Gilbert de Revilers, but calls him Gregory as she knew him when he was her second husband's clerk. A practical, good-natured mother of two little red-haired mischievious girls bu her second husband, and a son by Gregory. Has powerful healing skills, and can talk to God.
- Sir Hubert de Revilers: Lord of Brokesford Manor. A fierce, ham-fisted, blustering, battering ram of a man and personality, who only cares for the horses he raises, and the heirs he wants.
- Sir Hugo de Revilers: Oldet son and heir of Sir Hubert. Thick-headed, over-sexed, vain, cockerell married to a Lady Petronella
- Madame Agathe: A knight's widow hired to make ladies of Margaret's wild daughters, Cecile and Alison. Stern, proper and always a lady in control. Knows proper chivalry
- Alison Kendall: younger daughter of Dame Margaret, 7 1/2 with silky strawberry blonde hair
- Brother Malachi: Alchemist searching for the Philosopher's sone. Creates false pardons and relics to sell to keep himself in glass experimenting tubes. Old friend of Gilbert' and love of Mother Hilde's life. Like a father to Margaret
- Cecily Kendall: Older daughter of Dame Margaret, 9 with frizzy curling red hair. Wants to be a boy.
