“The Hobbit” is a delightful book for children. The great work it gave birth to, “The Lord of the Rings,” is the greatest fantasy novel ever written. It towers over everything, influenced everything, that has come after it. I first read it in junior high school during the 1970s and seldom does...

The entire series is brilliantly written, with a genius story line, and amazing descriptions. It has some parts that are a little hard to get though.

I've read all 3 of these books, & they are AMAZING. Middle Earth seems so real, & has so much folklore & legend in it--it must have taken qute a bit of thought to write these!!

One of my all-time favorites, this series now seems old fashioned in some ways. Tolkien was a British intellectual of the WWII generation and a conservative Christian, as his treatment of women shows. (I didn't love the films' "updating" of the female characters, either, though over all I enjoyed the film series.)
That said, Tokien created, in detail, an entire new world with it's own history, peopled by various races of folk (humans among them), each with its own language and culture. He created one complete language (Elvish), in which he wrote poetry. The story is layered with references to European lanaguages, literature and history, though you don't have to know this to enjoy the story. Don't be put off by the slightly archaic language of the narrative. If you're a good reader who has an appreciation of imaginative fiction with a strong moral base, this series if a must-read.

The first three were great, but the last ones and the ending were poor.

Ok, I don't have the box set, but i've read all the books. If you're a serious fantasy buff, then these are a must.
