Tolkien was a British intellectual of the WWII generation and a conservative Christian, as his treatment of women shows. (I didn't love the films' "updating" of the female characters, either, though over all I enjoyed the film series.)
That said, Tokien created, in detail, an entire new world with it's own history, peopled by various races of folk (humans among them), each with its own language and culture. He created one complete language (Elvish), in which he wrote poetry. The story is layered with references to European lanaguages, literature and history, though you don't have to know this to enjoy the story. Don't be put off by the slightly archaic language of the narrative. If you're a good reader who has an appreciation of imaginative fiction with a strong moral base, this series if a must-read.”
“The first three were great, but the last ones and the ending were poor.”
