Ballantine is THE publisher J.R.R. Tolkein himself authorized for reprinting of his work in 1973. If you would do homage to his memory, then buy (or borrow) and read THIS edition.

I have read these works more than two dozen times. And every time, I am always surprised to find something new, or a new angle I hadn't considered.

Enjoy. They are a parable for the Ages...

Read them in college...need to read them again. I will not be reading The Hobbit again. It took me longer to get through The Hobbit than the trilogy. I remember loving The Two Towers.

Have you noticed that Hobbit society looks more like actual human society than the Humans on the Middle Earth?

HU said that when he saw the movie, that everything was as he had imagined. I thought all this time that the Hobbits were living underground. After reading all three books! I preferred The Hobbit and laughed at the multiple breakfasts, as I ate two breakfasts at the time. I didn't enjoy the war details in the three books. I saw the cartoon, read the book of the cartoon, too.
