- Cara Diana Hunter: Our heroine, who has become in the course of her adventures a brave, strong and capable young woman. She has met the challenges posed to her with strength and intelligence. Only through finishing this quest can she truly begin to understand her own complicated lineage, that of human, unicorn and Hunter, and take her place amongst her illustrious family.
- Amalia Flickerfoot: The Wanderer, a wayward unicorn princess who escaped the hunters many years ago on earth by transforming into a human woman. As Ivy Morris, she lived a full life and had a daughter, Martha, and eventually a granddaughter, Cara. Only through Cara's incredible journey in the earlier books of the series was Flickerfoot brought back to her true self, accepting her rightful place as the Unicorn Queen. Now she must face the growing threat of the Hunters and The Last Hunt.
- Ian Hunter: Cara's father, a Hunter who through the love of his daughter came to realize the truth of Beloved's madness.
- Fallon: A golden-haired stranger, described as a very tall man of great beauty with mysterious, superhuman powers. He joined forces with Ian and Rajiv in order to find a lost friend...
- Rajiv: An Indian street urchin who is loyal, capable, and optimistic.
- Martha Hunter: Ian's wife and Ivy's daughter, who has been held prisoner in the Rainbow for many years and has no idea of her strange heritage.
- Lightfoot: Cara's dearest friend, a rebellious unicorn prince.
- Medafil: A grumpy griffon, and self-proclaimed poet with a penchant for shiny objects.
- Nezdik/Rocky: A delver who realized his king's madness, and joins forces with Cara and the others. He is greatly concerned about the fate of his people, and intrigued by the apparent ties to their hated enemies, the unicorns.
- M'Gama the Geomancer: A powerful, short-tempered earth-mage who helps Cara and the Unicorns.
- Graumag: A smallish bronze-green dragon with an abnormal history. She is rumored to be one of the friendliest dragons.
- Firethroat: A large ruby-colored dragon of immense age and wisdom - she is very powerful and benevolent, but not to be trifled with.
- Thomas the Tinker: A travelling handyman with an enchanted cart and a great ability to fix things. He loved Ivy in her human form.
- Feng Yuan: A Chinese girl who was raised to be a "Maiden of the Hunt" (unicorn bait for the hunters.) She contributes to the death of a unicorn and is horrified by her actions - she also has obsessively studied Sun-Tzu's "Art of War."
- Belle: An unusually fierce and warlike unicorn.
- Arianna: A centaur princess who is disturbed by the tremors in the earth, and feels that they foretell a great danger to the Centaurs and all of Luster.
- Arkon: The leader of the guard, who hopes to become the Chiron (Chief) of the Centaurs. He loves Arianna, but does not think that the outside world concerns the Centaurs.
- Allura: A mysterious golden-haired stranger of immense beauty. She knows much more than she tells.
- The Whisperer: A creature of darkness, formed when the Unicorns vainly attempted to purify themselves of all evil. He corrupted the race of delvers, and can see into the hearts of men. He is very persuasive, and seeks to destroy all things. Knows what each person wants or longs for.
- King Gnurflax: The mad king of the delvers, he is completely in thrall to the Whisperer.
- Beloved: An ancient woman who was granted eternal life and eternal pain through a tragic series of events. She blames the unicorns for this, and seeks to kill them all. She has trained her descendants, the Hunters, for one Purpose - to destroy all unicorns. Her ancient hair seems to have its own kind of life...
- The Dimblethum: A beast that appears to be half man and half bear - he is very strong and brutish, but also gentle. He cannot remember his mysterious past, but was subverted by the Whisperer to place the anchor that allowed Beloved and her Hunters to enter Luster. He gathers tales from the unicorns and writes them down into what he has called " The Unicorn Chronicles "
- Elihu: Big muscular man with golden hair. He seems to have a Great connection with the " Queens Five " and Luster...
- Namza: Delver Wizard For King Gnurflax. He also Believes that The King is mad.
