“An elderly couple driving home from Atlanta at dusk hit something in the road. They think it is a deer but soon find out it is a woman. When she arrives at the hospital in Atlanta the doctors discover her injuries are more severe than what the accident inflicted. A rib has been ripped out of her body, and she has deep cuts that are infected, not to mention that she is dehydrated and emaciated. A GBI agent quickly goes to the scene to have a look around only to find the local police are playing jurisdiction politics, leaving him to wander in the woods surrounding the accident looking for clues. When the local sheriff finds him, they literally stumble upon a cave dug into the ground- a cave that held two women who were tortured for days. This is one of Slaughters signature types of thrillers- crimes are horrendous, time is short, and the characters are complex and fascinating. Crimes are solved by lots of hard work, sometimes a bit of luck and not all is like it seems. This was a stumper right up until the end. I loved the characters and ultimately the ending. I’ll be looking for more.
