“This is a great book about history, how certain cities became cities and struggles the pioneers had to overcome. It is a big book so took a while to read”Erin W wrote this review Wednesday, April 10, 2013. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“term 1 800 pages.
there are lots of characters in this book, with lots of different personalty's. David is the main character in this story and he is often very moody. Molly is David's girlfriend and is always very happy. Abby is David's son to be girlfriend she is Molly's sister, she is very protective of her family and gets angry easily. John is David's father and is a real charmer to the girls. Patrick is the girls father and really likes David.
the setting in this book is the most important part it is set in the desert in southern Utah. they travel on a trail that has not been previously blazed so they must blow through all the rocks in the area to get through it. the author makes the setting seem so real it feels like your really there!
if i could ask the author something it would be " How did this huge book get filled with so much personality and detail?" because this book is historically accurate and fun to read. normally you think that a historical fiction is just as boring as the real thing. but this book surpasses all others! it is amazingly fun to read and packed with a lot of fun facts! it is an awesome book.”
“3.5 stars. I was amazed by the factual stuff. Would like to visit some of the sites one day. As for the fictional parts, only ok. The "love story" was kind of obvious. ”Brooke A wrote this review Monday, July 9, 2012. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No

#1 - Plot: Question #2
What did the author of this text do that helped you enjoy the story? That mad you not enjoy the story?
One of the things that the author did that helped me enjoy this story was that he added a little love story to it. It showed the couples trials with each other and on their journey. Like, adding almost every trial that they went through. Getting the call to go on the mission to San Juan and start to prepare for the future trials, to be called to go on an earlier mission right in the middle of preparing for the mission to San Juan.
#2 – Characters: Question #1
Which character(s) did you most enjoy? Why?
My favorite characters in this book are David, Molly, and Billy Joe (P.J.). David is the main character. He is one of my favorites because he changes so much in this story. David goes from being a young traveler to a man that is strong in his Faith. Molly is different from the others. She has been born and raised in her faith and has a strong testimony of the gospel and helps David grow stronger in his testimony too. Billy Joe is a young, bright and courageous six year-old. He is a joy to everyone he meets. Everybody loves to be around him.
#3 Point of View: Question #2
What did the author do to help you like that section?
In this section of the book, it shows just one of the Expedition Party’s trials. I love being able to read about these people and what they suffered and tried for each other and just because they had no choice. Such as, going across raging rivers with herds of horses, not to mention going through ice cold water trying to push you down stream. I still cannot believe that people actually did this. I cannot even begin to think what our state, Utah, would be like if these people hadn’t done what they did.
#4 Text: Question #3
As you read this text, describe how you felt.
While I was reading this book, I just couldn’t believe that these people actually did this. These Mormons had so much faith. When they got the call to go on this long trek to where they were to live and start a community. If I were them I would have a very hard time leaving my home, businesses, and establishments. I would go but it would be so difficult. I love the humor and the stories of their journeys. When times weren’t too serious, these Mormons laughed, joked around and played, just like any other day. ”
“It starts a little slow but author develops the characters really well and at the 1/3 mark I didn't want to put it down. ”Diane M wrote this review Tuesday, August 30, 2011. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“I really love this author. He does a good job at blending the fictional characters in with the historical characters. I like how he does footnotes during each chapter and tells more into the historical facts.
I had never heard of this expedition of pioneers. I love that it's so close to where I live... what an amazing journey!”
“It is a very good book, but it is taking me forever to get through it.”Belen J wrote this review Sunday, May 15, 2011. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
