Probably the best biography I've ever read, and has a reputation as the best presidential bio in contemporary times. You got such a thorough sense of who TR was. Meticulously researched, never boring, with great affection for its subject but not flinching from his human flaws. Everything a...

Edmund Morris is a wonderful biographer who makes history accessible for us non-historians. This was interesting and easy to read. This the first of two books and focuses on TR's pre-presidential life. I'm looking forward to reading the next book about his presidency.

I have read biographies since I was in 5th grade. I'm always interested in how and why the subjects came to be renowned/famous/infamous. I'm looking forward to Rex.

Simply stated - outstanding. This has been rated as one of the 50 best biographies ever written. It is certainly the best I have read. Even though it starts a little slowly, as all bios do in recapping the childhood of the subject, it is amazing what TR accomplished even as a child. He wrote a book on ornithology at the age of 12 which was used in the field for the next 100 years! It gets fascinating when he gets older. Cowboy, conservationist, NYPD Chief, Undersecretary of the US Navy (who basically built the modern navy), Rough Rider, Governor, and Vice President of the United States. Whew - I am out of breath already. The section on the Rough Riders and San Juan Hill are so vividly described I was dodging bullets while I read. I don't know if I agree with his politics, but he was an outstanding man - intelligent, highly principalled, brave, patriotic, and personal. Anybody who wants to understand how this country came of age into the 20th Century needs to read this book. It was the age of Theodore Roosevelt.

A stunner. Without question, my favorite biography that I've read. I'd like to think that Teddy would be shocked by what the Republican party has become today. Can't wait to read Theodore Rex.

The Rise of TR and Theodore Rex are the best bios I have ever read. True justice done to my 2nd favorite president. Even if you don't like bios or historical books these are a great read. I would put these down and think "this is a great book".
