  • Spider Jerusalem: The protagonist, a rogue gonzo journalist based on personalities such as H.L. Mencken and especially Hunter S. Thompson.
  • Gary Callahan: "The Smiler," one of the two primary presidential candidates. Originating from California, he is something of a cipher.
  • The Beast: America's current president for the last two terms, against whom Senator Callahan is running. A simple, brutish hedonist, he has a long history of animosity built up with Spider.
  • Channon Yarrow: Spider Jerusalem's former assistant and now bodyguard after a brief stint as a Bride of (Fred) Christ.
  • Yelena Rossini: Spider Jerusalem's assistant, and the niece of Mitchell Royce.
  • Joseph Heller: One of the major opposition candidates to the Beast, he is a macho, fascist bully.
