Haunting and somewhat frightening love story. Well-drawn characters, unforgettable ones, in fact. The main psychiatrist is rather chilling.

Didn’t Like It

I wanted to like this book, but found it distant and disappointing. I never really cared about any of the characters, and although a lot happens, none of it seems very intense or involving. I didn't dislike it enough to put it down, but kept reading in hopes it would get better. It didn't.

What is supposed to be a psychological thriller is so badly penned it is distracting. There is some weak irony here and a lot of predictability.

This book is totally pointless and depressing. The only thing going for the audio version is the narration by Sir Ian McKellan. There was not a single sympathetic or positive character, not much atmosphere or sense of place, and little motivation for some of the odder events. This book didn't teach me anything, didn't entertain me, and didn't inspire any insight or thinking on my part -- a total waste of time!

I was so disappointed in this book...I think it had the potential to be so much better...I was so excited about reading this and when I was done I thought, "what a waste of two days"!

Stella Raphael is in a loveless marriage. Her husband, Max, is deputy superintendant of an insane asylum and they live on the grounds. When a virile in-mate/gardener, Edgar Stark, makes contact with her, she allows herself to fall in love with him, knowing that he murdered his wife in an obsessive rage. A cruel tragedy ensues and our narrator, Peter Cleave, himself a psychiatrist, succumbs to Stella’s charms, too. An excellent book, gripping and haunting; although the ending is rather unsatisfying.

Written in a dreary tone reminiscent of Poe, Asylum mirrors the growing depression of its characters in both the environments they inhabit, and in the discerning foreshadowing that is prevalent throughout the story. Delivered with the pace and density of a fog, McGrath unfolds a bleak tale of morbid passion and delusional obsession. There are several fascinating layers to this compact, disturbing, and very well written novel. I look forward to reading McGrath’s other works.
