  • Valiar Marcus: First spear of the First Alerian Legion.
  • Bernard: Tavi's uncle and father figure. As a count he is a Citizen of Alera. Secretly married to Amara. He is a strong earth and wood crafter.
  • Araris: Araris Valerius is Tavi's bodyguard. He is a skilled swordsman and very powerful metalcrafter.
  • Amos: Military Commander and Senator
  • Amara: Countess, Cursor, strong windcrafter. She is secretly wed to Bernard.
  • Cyril: Captain Cyril is commander of the First Aleran Legion and later Sir Cyril is the senior adviser to Military Commander Senator Amos
  • Maximus Antillus: Tavi's friend. Often referred to as Max. He is the bastard son of Lord Antillus Raucous. Max is a very strong fury crafter. His water fury is a lion named Androcles though he is also a strong crafter in all other areas as well.
  • Kitai: Marat. Tavi's beloved. Daughter of Doroga, head of the Marat Gargant Tribe.
  • Isana: Tavi's aunt. She raised Tavi. She is a powerful watercrafter and very skilled at healing.

  • Canim: Large wolf-like beings. Fierce warriors. They belong to a caste social hierachy and tend to political fighting among themselves.
  • Canim - Warrior caste: Elite warriors of the Canim. Taller and stronger than the other castes.
  • Canim Ritualist caste: Spell casters of the Canim. They gain strength through the blood of intelligent creatures.
  • Alerans: Alerans are the humans in the book. They are the most developed civilization. They have a First Lord which controlls high lords and their territories. There is also a Senate that is the political controlling body. Citizens, which are the aristocracy, are appointed by the First Lord.
  • Dianic League: Group working towards women's rights.
  • Marat: A pale-skinned, sillver haired race that many Alerans consider to be barbaric humans. The Marat have different tribes that bond to creatures: Wolf, Herdbane, Gargant, Horse, Fox. This creature is their chala (Totem).
