Dancing bearware, the nemesis of design... This phrase comes to mind whenever I have to deal with some ill-planned interface. I like Cooper's analogies, pretty easy read for a complex topic.

This is not the edition I own, I actually own one of the first edition hardcovers, and it was signed by Alan Cooper at an STC conference I attended in 2000 in San Diego. I loved this book, it presents in clear terms why technology can drive us crazy and how to deal with it as developers, communicators, and managers in this industry. Even though this book is nearly 10 years old now, I am still finding much insight and humor from Cooper's thinking. Cooper has one hell of a good sense of humor, I roared laughing reading certain parts ("good interfaces should avoid presenting users with ejection-seat levers intermingled with the controls for common, everyday functions...")

I got a copy of this book from a contractor working for one of our clients after we discussed some interesting development concepts. I loved the way Alan Cooper brings forward some of the more common problems in my field (I'm a developer) and his suggestions on how to tackle them where life changing. All though I can't agree with everything he says, and I would love him to try some of the tools I work with, this book simply provides a brilliant insight into the challenges of writing good software.

Although I disagree with him on some things, generally he makes very good points about pre-production, which some people just don't seem to understand and think it's a waste of time. I love his writing style. Very easy to read and humorous.

One of the best technology books ever. If you can only read one technology book this year, make it this one. I'd lend you my copy, but its marked up, highlighted, post-it-noted to death. It's one of the most useful books I've ever owned. Coopers wisdom is contagious. Once you start reading you'll likely find yourself saying "That's why software sucks so bad so often." Even more importantly, you'll know the secrets of the industry from an insider who does not mince words.

Amazing book. Proved that there is no a bad user there is a bad UI design
