Liked It“The book started off very slow in true Beagle Style. Once you get going it was hard to put down. It turned out to be a good book to discuss with others. The setting of Dorset was amazing. Be prepared for too much teen angst in the first several pages!” see full review » see other reviews » |
Didn’t Like It“I didn't finish this one. It is written in 1st person by a teen girl who is taken from her home and moved to England when her mother remarries. The 1st person & whining got to be way too much. Perhaps if the first 3 1/4ths were removed from the beginning to the move to England I might have...” see full review » see other reviews » |

A lot of time is spent on narrative and descriptions. The title character does not appear until far into the book, and that was part of the problem. ”

A very different book from _The Last Unicorn_, but this first-person narrative sparkles with unique characters. Fantasy, but fantasy grounded in a very real setting. Bitter and sweet - in any one else's hands it would be sappy.”

I absolutely loved The Last Unicorn & A Fine & Private Place & highly recommend both. ”
“Along with The Last Unicorn, this is probably the most "girly" of Peter S. Beagle's novels, but it's fantastic. As always, his characters are strong and realistic, and his use of language beautiful. Cat-lovers will adore Jenny's cat and his ghost-companion, Miss Sophia Brown.”
