“This book took a little time to get up and running as the author builds an intricate and complex magic system as well as her political and world building. Carol Berg's attention to the finite details of her 'world' show throughout the book and whilst I felt that our main hero was somewhat neutered (perhaps the result of a male protagonist from a female author??), by the time I was mid-way through the book I was well and truly hooked.
An enjoyable and solid fantasy for those that like politcal machinations (and what good fantasy book doesn't have some?), smooth polished characters and a complex and intricate magic system, will have me 'all in' for the rest of the series.
One for lovers of High magic fantasies with a good dose of mystery and intrigue.”
“Best fantasy book I've read this year...(dark) fantasy, historical (Renaissance alternate universe), and mystery/thriller.”

Berg's language feels overly verbose sometimes, reminiscent of Victorian era prose. This fits the characterization of the obsequious narrator well, however, and ultimately serves the story. Well crafted suspense and mystery, leaving many intriguing questions at the end. Kind of a grown-up Harry Potter universe, brought to life with a lot of believable detail and multifaceted characters.”

An interesting world with intriguing characters. This sociopolitical thriller has enough twists to keep things engaging until the end and leave you wanting for the next book.
This isn't a book for the action crowd.”
“Very interesting story. Mysterious and kept me guessing! I usually read stories with romance but this story had a very good plot so I was still interested, so romance readers who like fantasy and magic, don't stray from this! Especially since the next installment is going to come from a girls point of view. I am very excited for the sequel since not everything got answered in this book.”
