Liked It“Fairly good near future thriller set in Scotland. Somewhat light on the action & suspense. The second person narrative was unique and I suppose put you into the character's heads more but also felt strange. Interesting commentary on where we're headed politically and technologically (and very...” see full review » see other reviews » |
Didn’t Like It“Had to do some serious skimming to get through this. Being a software guy who has played his share of MMORPGs I thought I'd like this. Unfortunately the characters didn't interest me much and there was just too much description of things like cab rides for my taste.” see full review » see other reviews » |

Still, this was a very fun story and the conceit of telling it in the second person worked infinitely better than i thought it could. My hat is off to Stross for telling such an entertaining story and I look forward to reading the sequel.”

I think it could have been a far better novel if Stross hadn't quite taken on so much of the gamer ethos. 2nd person was so distracting that it sounds like a bad text adventure at points. ”

In a not-to-distant future, in Scotland, the local constabulary is called in, to investigate a robbery, that takes place in cyberspace! This book is an excellent example of Stross' talent. A pretty original premise, a pretzel-like plot, very human characters(whom you really can care about), and a break-neck pace, that just might have you finish this book in one sitting. The pacing is fairly typical for a Stross novel. I've read 14 of his 20 published novels, to date, and will get to the rest as time allows. I just discovered Stoss within the last 12 months, and he's gone right to the top, of the 3 page list of my "favorite" authors. If you haven't checked him out yet, what are you waiting for?”
