• Miss Kate Ardleigh: An orphaned American of Irish descent who has inherited an estate from an Aunt. She has also become closely acquainted with Charles Sheridan. She secretly writes detective mysteries as Beryl Bardwell.
• Sir Charles Sheridan: A scientifically-minded aristocrat with some very high connections.
• Frances Evelyn "Daisy" Greville, Countess of Warwick: A socially-minded socialite whose overly-publicized affairs cause a bit of a stir. Currently the mistress of HRH the Prince of Wales, "Bertie"
• Reginald Wallace: Close friend of HRH the Prince of Wales, "Bertie". Former lover of Daisy.
• Amelia: Miss Kate Ardleigh's maid, and Lawrence's fiancee.
• Lawrence Quibbley: Valet and mechanic to Lord Bradford Marsden, and Amelia's fiance.
• Sir Friedrick Temple: Well-known Conservative and nephew of the Archbishop of Canterbury. Attracted to Kate.

• Winnie Wospottle: The laundress of the estate. She's also Lawrence's old fling who causes Amelia a spot of trouble.
• Marsh: An angry character, Meg's fiance, and a bit of an anarchist. His father, a "beater" was accidentally shot by the Countess of Warwick, and subsequently had a leg amputated and died thereafter..
