  • Charles Sheridan: amateur archeologist, photographer and sleuth. He helped solve the murders of Kate's aunts. He spent summers with relatives and was good friends with Edward Laken, aka Ned and Arthur "Artie" Oliver. Interested in Kate Sheridan. Received his knighthood because of his photography skills.
  • Sergeant Arthur Oliver: deceased constable of the hamlet of Gallows Green. Husband of Agnes and father of Betsy
  • Agnes Oliver: Wife of Sergeant Arthur Oliver, mother of Betsy
  • Betsy Oliver: tom-boyish daughter of Arthur and Harriet Oliver. Ranges with her sheepdog Kep, and hunts at night with her owl, Mr. Browne
