Gathering Blue

by Lois Lowry

Lois Lowry's magnificent novel of the distant future, The Giver, is set in a highly technical and emotionally repressed society. This eagerly awaited companion volume, by contrast, takes place in a village with only the most rudimentary technology, where anger, greed, envy, and casual cruelty make ordinary people's lives short and brutish. A wonderful book! The world that Lois Lowry creates is very similar to The Giver.

I liked this one better than the giver, although they are both really good. Interesting how Lowry made them about the same major "catastrophic" event happening and the different ways society could evolve. I didn't like the messenger as well. Something about these reminds me a little of Lord of the Flies, I guess because we always wonder what would happen if all the previous ways of living were thrown out the window and we had to start fresh.
