When Mercy Thompson, mechanic and shape-shifter, attempts to return a powerful fae book she previously borrowed in an act of desperation, she finds the bookstore locked up and closed down.

It seems the book contains secrets -- and the fae will do just about anything to keep it out of the wrong hands. And if that doesn't take enough of Mercy's attention, her friend Samuel is struggling with his wolf side -- leaving Mercy to cover for him lest his own father declare Samuel's life forfeit.

All in all, Mercy has had better days. And if she isn't careful, she may not have many more...

Characters edit see section history

  • Mercedes "Mercy" Thompson: A mechanic and a "walker"—a Native American shapeshifter who transforms into a coyote, sees the spirits of the dead, and has an inborn resistance to most magic (vampire or otherwise). She bought her moderately-successful and beloved auto repair shop from Zee.
  • Adam Hauptman: Alpha of the Columbia Basin werewolf pack and Mercy's mate.
  • Siebold "Zee" Adelbertsmiter: Mercy's former boss, a mechanic. A self-described "gremlin", a fae who works metal.
  • Samuel Cornick: A lone alpha werewolf who is Mercy's roommate. A doctor, and son of Bran Cornick, the Marrok.
  • Stefan Uccello: A vampire in the local seethe. Mercy gets along with him. He owns a VW bus that is painted to resemble the one from Scooby Doo.
  • Jesse Hauptman: Adam's teenage daughter.
  • Phineas Brewster: Owner of the used bookstore Mercy borrowed her book on fae from.
  • Alicia Brewster: Phineas' grandmother, also known as Ariana.
  • Gabriel Sandoval: Mercy's office assistant.
  • Sylvia Sandoval: Gabriel's mother.
  • Tony Montenegro: A human cop and acquaintance of Mercy's. Able to make his undercover personas very convincing.
  • Bran Cornick: The Marrok, is the Alpha werewolf of all the werewolf packs in North America. He took Mercy in when she was a toddler and helped raise her. It is because of him and Mercy's foster parents that she knows more about werewolves than she has to.
  • Daphne Rondo: Kelly Heart's producer. A fairy queen.
  • Kelly Heart: A reality television bounty hunter.
  • Ben: Adam accepted him into his pack, and he was soon initiated as an official member of the Tri-Cities pack. Ben is described briefly in "Moon Called" and "Blood Bound" as being a sexist character.
  • Warren: a homosexual werewolf (who is dating Kyle, a well-known divorce attorney) and one of Mercy's closest friends. He is also Adam's third in the pack.
  • Darryl: He's the second dominant in the Columbia Basin pack, likes to cook for the pack, and his mate is Auriele.
  • Honey: Low-ranked in the Columbia Basin werewolf pack. Mate of Peter, a submissive wolf.
  • Auriele: Mate of Darryl in Columbia Basin werewolf pack and one of the strongest females.
  • Mary Jo: unmated female in the Columbia Basin werewolf pack, has a crush on Adam, and despises Mercy.
  • Paul: a werewolf in the Columbia Basin pack.
  • Kyle Brooks: a human and the best divorce attorney in North America. Kyle is one of Mercy's closest friends as well as Warren's boyfriend.
  • Signora Marsilia: Leader of the Vampire seethe in the Tri-Cities.
  • Henry: werewolf in the Columbia Basin pack. Dated Mary Jo.
  • Tad Adelbertsmiter: Zee's son.
  • Charles Cornick: Bran's son, the only born werewolf. Bran's enforcer.
  • Anna: Charles's mate and an Omega.
  • Ariana: the maker of the Silver Borne. She is Welsh and Very old. Ariana means silver in old Welsh.
  • Yo-yo Girl: the name Mercy gave to a Fae she met; the Fae is very old and powerful, even if she looks as a eight-year-old girl.

Quotes edit see section history

  • “So far he and Adam, the local pack's Alpha—and my lover—hadn't killed each other. I was moderately hopeful that would continue to be the case.”
    Mercy
  • “Deine Mutter war ein Cola-Automat!”
    Zee
  • “Why is it that all cars are women?” “Because they’re fussy and demanding." “Because if they were men, they’d sit around and complain instead of getting the job .done”
    Gabriel, Zee and Mercy
  • “Such a small thing to cause so much trouble”
    Adam
  • “That was a lead bullet. He'll be fine.”
    Mercy
  • “You’re okay with marrying a werewolf who has a teenage daughter and a pack that’s falling apart—and your mother panics you?" “You’ve met my mother. She ought to panic you, too.”
    Adam and Mercy
  • “I might be dumb, but I’m not that dumb. I’ve gotcha now, and you aren’t getting away.”
    Mercy to Adam
  • “I was probably being paranoid. The world didn’t revolve around me, after all. Just because this past year I’d had vampires, fae, and werewolves try to kill me at various times didn’t mean someone was after me at present.”
    Mercy
  • “Scott?” “Yeah?” “Unless someone shoots you, skins you, and throws the results on the floor, I don’t wantto see you lying in the walkway again.”
    Adam and Scott
  • “I’m not seeing a happy-ever-after ending here, are you?” “Endings are relative. I mean, as long as no one is dead, they get the chance to rewrite their endings, don’t you think? Take it from me, Samuel, a little time can heal some awfully big wounds.”
    Zee and Mercy
  • “If you leave me naked and waiting on the bed without making love to me, I’ll—” I didn’t get to finish the threat. I think it was the word “naked,” though maybe it was “bed,” but before I finished my sentence, he was on me.”
    Mercy
  • ““I can live with that,” he said. And then he demonstrated what that possession would mean when it involved an Alpha werewolf who knew how to be patient and thorough when hunting coyotes.”
    Adam
