Awesome book. Cornelia was kind of annoying, but Coel is my secret crush.

Hade's Daughter is the first book in an alternate history/across time series by Sara Douglass. It revolves around Cornelia, Brutus, Asterion, and Genvissa. Originally Ariadne was shunned by Theseus for having a daughter, leaving her to seek her revenge through the destruction and rebirth of the Troy Game, and selling her soul to Asterion. Many years later Genvissa, born of Ariadne's lineage, seduces Brutus, the last Kingman of Troy, to rescue his people and move to the Llangarlia to start Troia Nova, reinstating the game. This is the basic plotline that is then layered with gods and goddesses, cultural differences, Asterion waiting in the background to make his move, and glimpses of 1939 England.

For my first Sara Douglass book I really enjoyed it and cannot wait to find a copy of the second book, Gods' Concubine. I have problems reading books over 300 pages so I appreciated that Douglass had many breaks and chapter divisions. I also liked that she showed the differences in culture between the Trojans and the Llangarlians. Probably the only difficult part in reading was watching Cornelia's character be so abused.

I was a big fan of the Wayfarer Redemption series so I was expecting a lot from these books. I was a little disappointed. I didn't think the plot got really good until the very last book, which I thought was the best of the series. The characters really annoyed me at times, even though I couldn't quite put my finger on why. I didn't think the series needed to be 4 books long...I thought some of the plot-line was very drawn out. Furthermore, book 4 it seemed a little disconnected from the series...I started reading it and it seemed almost as though Douglass has gotten sick of her character plotline in the previous 3 so she started a new one (which I think was better and kept my interest better than the first 3). I would definitely recommend the Wayfarer Redemption series over this one.
