“This is the book I credit for making me a reader. The prose is playful, the characters are quirky and vivid. I think I have a thing for the fungi-hunting, lovely Amanda. The story takes place, most of it, in the Skagit Valley, and the big "what if's..." that this book brings to the reader, though similar to the drive of a Dan Brown book, are much more interesting thanks to the aforementioned playfulness, humor and quirkiness of Robbins' characters and wit.
Some readers may find the opening of the story a bit dry as the scene is set and characters introduced, but it is well worth the wait for the ride off into the sun. Assassins commissioned by the Pope?! A baboon nanny?! Beautiful, beautiful stuff.”
“It's taken me a week to read 70 pages of this book. It's definitely not something I would call gripping. I don't want to pass judgement on it, yet. I'm hoping it gets better at some point. I love the style, but the plot is somewhat dull so far.
I have a few a few books in my possession that look much more interesting. I'll have to get back to this one.”
“It's a toss up between this & Jitterbug Perfume for my favorite book. The characters, EVERYTHING about this book is just GREAT!”

If you like his style check out Even Cowgirls Get the Blues. Note: I heard that this was the book on Elvis' bathroom floor when he died.”

Yes | No“The novel follows the adventures of John Paul Ziller and his wife Amanda—lovable prophetess and promiscuous earth mother, unarguably the protagonist—who open "Captain Kendrick's Memorial Hot Dog Wildlife Preserve," a combination hot dog stand and zoo along a highway in Skagit County, Washington. Other characters in this rather oddball novel include Mon Cul the baboon; Marx Marvelous, an educated man from the east coast; and L. Westminster "Plucky" Purcell, a former college football star and sometime dope dealer who accidentally infiltrates a group of Catholic monks working as assassins for the Vatican. In so doing Plucky discovers a secret of monumental proportions dating to the very beginning of Christianity.

“This is the only Tom Robbins' book I haven't read. Robbins is my favorite contemporary author, and (as morbid as it sounds) I'm saving this one to read when Robbins goes to the great authors' retreat in the sky. ”
